Output of Kaunas hydro plant up by 25% in 9 months

BC, Vilnius, 17.11.2017.Print version
Lithuania's largest hydro power plant – Kaunas Hydro Power Station operated by state-owned electricity production group Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba (Lithuanian Energy Production, or LEG) – raised its electricity output by nearly one fourth in the first nine months of this year, as compared with the same period of 2016, informs LETA/BNS.

LEG said the year 2017, with large amounts of precipitation, would make history as one of the most water years in the past six decades. The average flow of water arriving at the Kaunas hydro station via the River Nemunas was around 300 cubic meters per second in the first three quarters of 2017.

In January through September, the power plant generated 318 gigawatt-hours of electricity, which is up by 23%, from 257 GWh year-on-year. Meanwhile, the output at Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant was 404 GWh, almost unchanged from 411 GWh last year and the Lithuanian power plant in Elektrenai produced 129 GWh of electricity, down by 58% year-on-year. This was due to changes of the market conditions.
