12pc people use electricity for cooking purpose
A survey conducted by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) found that around 12.1 percent of people across the country use electricity for cooking purpose.
According to the survey, 7 percent people in rural areas, 20 percent in municipality and 27.5 percent in city areas use electricity for cooking.
The BBS survey, however, does not provide any detail on whether the use is for microwave ovens or for fulltime cooking.
State Minister Nasrul Hamid, who was present at the programme for the release of the survey report, said there would have been different answers from the respondents if questions were asked in detail.
"Such respondents might be users of both electricity and gas for their cooking," he added.
Prime Minister's Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury defended the BBS survey, saying there was no scope for asking detailed questions about the matter as it was a computer-assisted telephonic interview (CATI).
Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus also defended the BBS survey result saying that the use of electric home appliances is on the rise.
Financed by Energy and Power Research Council, the survey report was released at a press conference at the capital's Bidyut Bhaban yesterday.
BBS director CS Roy presented the report while PDB chairman Khaled Mahmud, REB chairman Maj Gen Moin Uddin and BBS Director General Amir Hossain were present.
BBS conducted the survey twice -- in October 2016 and February in 2017 -- among 14,996 people, randomly selected from a list of 122,427 male and female mobile phone users.
The survey also found that 86.9 percent people are satisfied with "the improvement of electricity services compared to previous 6 years" while 13.1 percent not satisfied.
