As he grew older, he and his brother staged family performances, including a presentation of The Wizard of Oz in his father’s barn, in which he portrayed Dorothy.

Groff lists Sutton Foster as one of his biggest inspirations and heroes, and when he was a budding actor, he used to wait outside the theater entrance for her signature after her shows. Groff was encouraged to pursue a career in theater when he joined the drama departments of his middle and high schools.

Groff participated in a lot of local productions in his adolescence while living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He got a community prize for directing and performing in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown at the Fulton Opera House high school theater festival when he was seventeen years old.
