The Guyana Power and Light company (GPL) will begin efforts to connect the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) to a Turkish electricity generation ship that arrived in the country to help alleviate blackouts.

The ship, which has capacity to generate 36 megawatts of electricity, arrived at Everton in Region Six yesterday after a two-week journey from Cuba.

Guyana’s Department of Public Information (DPI) reported a team of engineers and other technical officers are carrying out final preparations to accommodate the vessel.

Zone Manager of GPL, Berbice Ravindra Jagnandan told DPI that some work was delayed due to bad weather.

“Once the ship is docked we have to connect the ship to our 69 kilovolts network. When that is finished, we have some more maintenance work to do on our transmission lines and then we can inject power into the grid from the ship,” Jagnandan explained.

The ship is expected to become fully operationalised by May 8 and it is expected to operate at 96 per cent availability.

The power ship will work together with 17 generators and six step-up transformers that the government recently acquired to produce another 30 megawatts for the grid.

GPL is set to keep the ship on its network for at least a year as the government works to improve power generation capabilities through projects such as the Gas to Shore development in Wales.
