LA Fitness  plans to open  its first Delaware location at the Eden Square shopping center near the intersection of Routes 40 and 7.

The fitness giant has opened a sign-up center in the large strip center that is anchored by a Giant store.

The lease for 28,000 square feet  was announced a year ago, but no activity had taken place until recently.  The site would be one of the largest fitness centers in the region, with a pool.

The pool would provide competition for the YMCA, which has a branch on the Glasgow side of Route 40.

Work is now underway on a section of the center that formerly housed a Lowe’s store and will likely become the site of the fitness center.

The home improvement retailer moved across Route 40 to a larger and more modern location.

Clothing chain Gabe’s occupies a portion of the former Lowe’s space. Anchor store for the center is Giant, formerly Super G.

LA Fitness has about  700  clubs around the nation and in Canada.

Representatives from the  Southern California company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on a timetable for the opening.
