Maharashtra govt to adopt energy conservation building code, draft out by month-end
PUNE: Maharashtra is set to adopt the Energy Conservation Building Code to ensure energy-efficient buildings.
Vipin Sharma, director general, Maharashtra Energy Development Authority (MEDA), said that the state government will come out with the final operating mechanism for the code, which will be placed in the public domain by May 31 for inviting suggestions from citizens.
“Once the code is notified, it will be voluntary for the first six months beyond which, it will be mandatory,” he said at a workshop on the code here on Friday.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, has notified that the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), 2017, will be adopted at the state level. The adoption of the code will help in saving minimum 25% energy.
The adoption of the code at the national level is estimated to save around 300 billion units of electricity by 2030. As of now, 12 states in the country have notified the code and other states are at various levels of adoption/notification.
Under Indo-European Union (EU) collaboration on energy, European Union delegation has extended support to BEE and four states -- Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar -- in adopting the code.
Addressing the gathering, Sharma said that close to 1,000 new commercial connections are given every year in Maharashtra and adoption of the code will help reduce energy demand by 550 MW by 2030.
Sharma said that MEDA will come up with the concept of a net zero energy building, which will be a model building to be replicated at the national and state level.
